Oh Tropico, how I love your classic Spanish soundtrack, and your strange obsession with Llamas. I grew up playing this little gem, and as time went on I noticed how true each entry in the franchise would stay to its core. The core gameplay that made Tropico what it was has always remained over the 20 years of its existence. It’s things like this that bring me back to franchises every single time. I fell in love with a game for a reason, so if there is a sequel that keeps its core you better believe im going to buy it. With the most recent entry Tropico 6 making its way on consoles, I finally had the opportunity to sit down and give it a try.
Tropico 6 Review
Right out of the gate, players that played the previous entry will feel right at home. We’re still thrown into the colonial era where we must purchase our right to govern from the crown, or fight them for independence. I honestly have a hate/love relationship with this. Like yeah it gives you time to focus on your agriculture for the next era, but the cost of juggling the demands of the crown honestly makes the tasks near impossible for new players. Even me being a veteran in Tropico I had my governor madate expire making me lose the game. I mean it’s cool, but for newer players I definitely reccomend starting at the world wars era.
As the eras progress you’ll slowly unlock more industrial building that convert your agricultural and mined resources into luxury goods. Through your trade screen you’ll be able to make trade agreements with the world’s super powers in their respected eras which gives your economy a much needed boost. I can not stress how important trade is in this game. Many times, I found myself dipping in the negative because I would trade off my resources before making my industrial buildings. If they don’t have resources how can they produce the luxury goods? You definitely have to keep an eye out of exactly what you’re exporting. There are certain selections you can make that will route your teamsters to your industry instead of the dock to be exported raw. Don’t make the mistakes I made! It makes the game so much harder than it needs to be.
One of the best new features about Tropico 6 is the ability to send raiding teams out into the world to steal world monuments. Like seriously. You can go out and swipe the White House right from Pennsylvania Avenue. It’s pretty crazy, but is honestly home of the best additions added since the last installment in the franchise. Adding these monuments to the landscape of Tropico does so much more than add an attractive appeal to the island. Each one has a small bonus that increases some kind of area on the island. It also gives your citizens something fun to do no matter what their income level is. It’s really one of the coolest things, but you have to be strategic with which ones you steal.
Even though these new features add a great flare to the game there is still one major draw back. Happiness. Keeping your citizens happy is one of the most tedious tasks in the game. For me it was Healthcare. I did everything from building eight clinics for the poor, as well as raise the budgets of all health care buildings. Still couldn’t get their happiness over 40%. I tried absolutely everything to where I honestly gave up on it to move on to other projects. It’s a small down side to a great game, but one to keep in mind if you’re not one for micro managing.
Overall, Tropico 6 is a fantastic city builder. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a 4x strategy game for all you Civilization and Age of Wonders players out there. This is a true micro managing simulator that will challenge even the most experienced dictators. Just remember to have fun with it, and understand you will fail. However, just like in life, each failure is a lesson learned for down the road.
