The Most Overrated Horror Movies

It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks left til Halloween. If you haven’t started watching your favorite Halloween movies, you better start now because you are running out of time.

And time is such a precious thing isn’t it? With many of us working full time jobs and some of us with kids, when you do finally have time to sit down and watch something, you want it to be good. To (hopefully) save you some time, here are my top 3 overrated horror movies that I do not recommend.

Disclaimer: I’m a big believer in letting people enjoy things. If some of these movies are your favorites, tell me why! I’ll give them another shot.

Midsommar (2019)

There was so much hype around Midsommar. I was so excited to watch it once it was finally on Amazon Prime. I am a huge Florence Pugh fan. And yet, this movie seriously underwhelmed me.

The acting and visuals are great. However, the story seemed a bit weak to me. I don’t want to give any spoilers away but the premise of the film is a young woman goes with her boyfriend and his group of friends to Sweden for a festival. I’ll just leave it at that. I think if this movie wasn’t classified as “horror,” I would’ve enjoyed it a little more.

Teeth (2007)

I love a movie about a strong woman as much as the next girl, but this one left me ✨uncomfy✨. I also think that your gender determines if you view this movie as horror or as a comedy. I know I spent the majority of this movie laughing.

Teeth is about a teenage girl who has a unique defense mechanism. Her vagina has teeth. That’s the plot…yep. If anyone out there does like this movie, please let me know because I am genuinely curious why you do.

The Exorcist (1973)

Okay I know I may get a lot of hate for this, but I don’t think The Exorcist is that great of a movie. For it’s time, I believe it probably was groundbreaking, but now watching it in 2020, it just feels cheesy.

The Exorcist is about a young girl who becomes possessed and her mother reaches out to a priest to help. I will say that even if I’m not a huge fan of the original, I am really excited about the remake coming out in 2021.

What horror movies do you think are overrated? Am I totally wrong about some of these? Let us know in the comments! Stay spooky 👻

  1. I will stipulate that I was a kid when I saw it and it may be lame now, but the Exorcist is one of the only movies that truly and honestly scared me.

One of the few arrows I have in my quiver of seeming interesting is the fact that I’ve assisted with an exorcism. It wasn’t terribly interesting really but it sounds like it would be.

    1. Oh I think it would be terrifying to watch as a kid. I know it still creeps my dad out as well. And I have as well! Definitely not like the movies!
