Welcome to today’s installment of Cult Classic Throwback with your pals at 101 Militia Gaming! Today we are going to talk about one of the most popular cult classic games of all time. Yep, you’ve got it – we’re discussing the original The Sims.

Like many young kids, I was first introduced to The Sims franchise when my dad brought home a copy of the computer game, along with its first expansion – The Sims Livin’ Large. From the very beginning I was hooked! I would work hard to collect every expansion as they would be released. I would download new clothing options and mods to enhance the gameplay. And trust me, I loved everything about it because as an eight or nine year old, I had never seen anything quite like it before. From the music score to the slice-of-life gameplay, it was hard to go wrong with The Sims. As a matter of fact, going wrong with the game soon became part of the game as well. There are folks out there that play just to discover new gruesome ways to murder their poor simulations in cold blood. And I actually believed without a doubt that I was the very first person to discover drowning sims in the pool by removing the ladder…
Anywho, for those of you that are unfamiliar with The Sims, it was created by Maxis and released in North America February 4, 2000 as a spin-off of the ever popular SimCity. The original had seven expansions:
The Sims: Livin’ Large
The Sims: House Party
The Sims: Hot Date
The Sims: Vacation
The Sims: Unleashed
The Sims: Superstar
The Sims: Makin’ Magic
Each expansion had a host of different gameplay options with special clothes, build supplies, and items for the sims’ houses and community properties. This was the number one game that taught the player everything from interior design to family dynamics. And sure, while the game certainly improved in many ways with future editions, the original game will always be a fan favorite and a cult classic.
