At the Opera Tonight

Hi, my name is LadyMcCool and I’m addicted to musicals. Music and theatre have always been a huge part of my life. So, today I thought I would share with you one of the strangest, fun, hopefully-not-going-to-be-realistic in the not so distant future science fiction/ horror musicals out there….Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Repo takes place in a futuristic world where organ failure has become an epidemic. GeneCo, a biotech company, has created an organ financing program. Sounds great right? Well, if the patient is unable to pay on their new organ, the repo man comes and takes it from their body. Did I mention this is not family friendly?

In the film adaptation, we are blessed with an interesting/amazing cast. Repo Man is played by one of my personal favorites, Anthony Head (also plays Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). In Repo, we learn about the Repo Man’s back story. Repo Man, whose real name is Nathan, fell in love with a woman, Marni. Marni used to be the lover of the head of GeneCo, Rotti. Marni becomes pregnant with Nathan’s child but becomes very sick during her pregnancy. Rotti is evil and bitter so he switches the antidote that would’ve saved Marni’s life with poison. Nathan is able to save his daughter, Shilo.

Shilo is played by Alexa PenaVega (where are my Spy Kids fans at?). Nathan warns Shilo that she has inherited her mother’s disease so she must stay in her room forever. Oh, and she also has no idea that her dad is the Repo Man.

Poor Shilo doesn’t know her daddy is a killer

I don’t want to give away the whole plot but let me just wrap up with saying that if you don’t want to miss out on blind Sarah Brightman kind of giving you gothic Phantom of the Opera vibes and Paris Hilton trying to be an actress. This movie really has it all.

Have you seen Repo! The Genetic Opera? Do you love it or hate it? What’s your favorite part? Let us know!
