The Bad Rap: Naruto’s Sakura

Oh, Sakura. For years she has been the character many have loved to hate in the Naruto series. But why is that? Well, it is up to discussion in today’s installment of The Bad Rap!

Sakura Haruno in Naruto

We first meet Sakura Haruno in the original Naruto series. Originally, she is seen as a lovesick pre-teen with a lot of sass and not much to show for it. To be fair, there is a ton of angst from several characters in the beginning – Naruto has a tremendous crush on her and Sakura is completely infatuated with the dark and mysterious Sasuke. Low and behold, the three just happen to be placed together on the same team.

Sakura isn’t exactly the most powerful and her attitude could make any viewer lose patience with her after a few episodes. And her disrespect to our boy Naruto? Yeah, that ain’t the way we do things, Sakura.

However, when it comes right down to it, Sakura does step up to the plate and never backs down. Though she is just about as average as a kunoichi can be without a clan jutso, she still manages to pull through for Team 7 and goes on to develop her own impressive skill set.

So, what is it about Sakura that gets under so many people’s skin? Is it her early angst and self-confidence issues (we all remember the bullying regarding her forehead, right?) or is it just her character in general? Personally, I found her to be annoying and sometimes even cruel early on, but as she grows up and discovers more about who she is and what she has to offer, she becomes strong in her own rite.
