My husband and I love watching horror movies together. Lately though, it seems like it’s getting harder and harder to find ones that aren’t hot pieces of trash.
Recently we watched the new remake of the Grudge. I was hopeful that it would live up to the original Japanese film or even the American version from 2004. The concept was interesting with bringing the curse to an American setting, however, it just left me kinda meh in the end.
This really got me wondering, are we just becoming too desensitized to horror movies? Are we just getting to the point where we have seen it all so nothing really scares us anymore? Or, are all the good ones hiding out so we have to dig through our Netflix and Amazon Prime lists to search them out?I can really only think of a handul of movies that still give me the creeps if I happen to rewatch them.
One of my all time favorites is a hidden gem that not most people have heard of. The Banshee Chapter.
Surprisingly not actually about banshees, the movie is based on “From Beyond” by H.P. Lovecraft. The movie follows a group of people investigating the government’s use of MKUltra on citiziens and yeah, I don’t want to give it away, but it gets crazy.
I will leave you with another hidden gem. The Conspiracy (2012)
This is another found footage film following two documentary filmmakers who are doing a film about conspiracy theories. Things quickly take a turn for the darker side and they find themselves becoming deeply involved in some research that they may or may not be able to escape from.
Lastly, I leave you with a movie series that left my husband and I wondering, wait…is this real? The Blackwell Ghost 1-4
The Blackwell Ghost follows a filmmaker as he is trying to create something new. He stumbles across the story of the Blackwell Ghost. This movie has Paranormal Activity vibes but has some unexpected twists and turns. The movie is a slow burn that makes you feel uncomfortable and on edge for the entire experience, which is what I love most about horror movies.
Have you seen any of these movies? Do you have a favorite hidden gem out there? Let us know in the comments!
